Foundation for People of Burma
At a time of reflection over 2008, remember those who suffered in natural disasters earlier this year. A cyclone in May, and a government's resistance to help, has devastated Myanmar (Burma). But the Foundation for the People of Burma, due to its existing local network, started an immediate and continuing response.
Working in the country since 1999, Foundation staff and volunteers immediately began delivering food while the government banned aid from outside organizations. Workers dredged and replanted 10,000 acres of rice fields. Volunteers encouraged children to draw their stories during art therapy. Work continues as many schools are still closed.
