Reach Out and Read
When a child receives a book, he can imagine a whole new world. Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses at pediatrician's offices to give books to young children, age 6 months to 5 years, and to encourage parents to read to them. Parents learn to foster a love of books, for example, by asking story-building questions of preschoolers.
Reach Out and Read focuses on children growing up in poverty. The organization has trained more than 50,000 doctors and has distributed 20 million books. Studies have shown that children who receive books achieve higher language test scores.
