Reach Out and Read

When a child receives a book, he can imagine a whole new world. Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses at pediatrician's offices to give out books to young children, age 6 months to 5 years, and to encourage parents to read to them. Parents learn to foster a love of books, for example, by asking story-building questions of preschoolers.

Reach Out and Read focuses on children growing up in poverty. These children receive up to 12 books each by age 5, and studies have shown that their language scores improve as a result.

Go to Reach Out and Read to donate, contribute books, or encourage your local pediatrican's office to start a program.
